Voices of Leadville & Lake County

The YAK: Stories That Root Us was a live storytelling event hosted as part of the One Community Project—a year-long effort to create a shared vision and comprehensive plan for Leadville and Lake County. Through personal stories, poetry, and art, The YAK celebrated the voices and experiences that shape this community. More than just a night of entertainment, it was a space to reflect on what connects us, what matters most, and how our shared stories can guide the future we build together.

Why Are We Doing This?

State statutes require municipalities to develop and maintain a comprehensive plan, which sets the foundation for local regulations and is critical for securing public funding and grants. The County and City are committed to creating a plan that is responsive to community input and feedback. This project will help us address important questions: How can we support local businesses? How do we make housing more affordable? How can we keep our neighborhoods safe and our roads and sidewalks in good shape? And most importantly—how can we make sure our community is a place where everyone feels they belong?

Our community is changing, with more visitors, growing economic pressures, and new challenges. The One Community Project is our chance to shape that change, ensuring that the character and values of Leadville and Lake County remain strong and vibrant.

Values Goal!

We officially met our community engagement goal for the “Assess” phase of the project!

From January to April 2025, we asked community members what they love most about Leadville and Lake County, as well as their fears and hopes for the future. Thank YOU to the hundreds of locals who helped us collect more than 800 points of insight through values surveys, small group conversations, and one-on-one interviews.

We are now collecting feedback on draft values statements. These Values are meant to reflect the spirit of Leadville and Lake County. Help us reach our goal of collecting feedback from at least 200 community members by the end of June!
